In line with our commitment to environmental stewardship, we encourage countryside burials to opt for eco-friendly body shrouds or coffins made of materials such as cardboard or chipboard, sourced responsibly and not from rainforests. While these are readily available through most funeral directors, we are also available to offer assistance if needed. Funeral arrangements can be made with the assistance of a funeral director, ensuring a personalized and professional service for the family. For those considering alternative options, guidance can be sought from The Natural Death Centre (Telephone: 020 8208 2853).
Commemorative trees can be purchased through the Estate and will be planted at the appropriate time of year. A variety of tree species including Ash, Oak, Lime, Beech, Larch, Wild Cherry, and Hazel will be available for selection. The graves themselves may be adorned with wildflower seeds, with only a small flat stone permitted as a memorial within the Burial Ground.
To facilitate future reference, the position of all graves will be meticulously recorded on a plan. It's important to note that graves will eventually be enveloped by the natural growth of grasses and flowers in the meadow.
Cremated remains may be scattered in the designated area of the burial ground, with no specific record kept of their exact location. Additionally, plots are available for the burial of cremated remains in a casket.
The management of the Burial Site will focus on fostering a diverse meadow ecosystem with native tree copses. Grass cutting will be limited to twice a year to promote wildflower growth, with walkways being maintained more frequently. In line with our commitment to sustainability, no herbicides will be used except to aid the growth of young trees and, if necessary, to control noxious weeds.
As the Burial Ground is a natural site with limited paths, we advise attendees to wear suitable footwear for interments or peaceful remembrance visits.
